Matrix Adds Pioneer IM to its range of Advanced Polymer Centralisers
The Matrix range of Advanced Polymer Centralisers are designed to convey well screens, completion tool strings and typical casing and tubing strings into highly deviated and challenging horizontal wellbores.
Matrix’s focus on developing composite materials has helped them develop a range of lightweight, durable centralisers that exhibit ultra low friction factors. They’ve been used by operators in US Shale, Western Siberia, Thailand, Australia’s Cooper Basin and a range of other Australian development projects, with over 130,000 centralisers shipped to date.
Pioneer IM added to the Matrix range
In 2014, Matrix introduced a new low friction, high impact material into its range, based on the highly popular and field-proven Pioneer centraliser.

The Pioneer IM has been specifically developed to withstand high impact forces sometimes sustained during surface handling operations in cold temperature environments. It’s available in sizes to suit 4.1/2” through to 10.3/4” pipe in various ODs and complements the existing range of Matrix centralisers.
According to Jason Kent, Matrix’s Well Construction Product Line Manager, the Pioneer IM is the result of a significant development process.
“We’re pleased to bring this product to market and continue working with the R&D Solutions team as our local distributor. It took some 12 months to research and develop and went through a comprehensive, independent mechanical and chemical testing process before being released for use downhole,” he said.
Testing was conducted on 4.1/2” Centralizers in Houston, Texas using impact test methods based on API 10TR5. It resulted in the Pioneer IM material being able to withstand 2.3 times more transverse impact energy and 22% more axial impact energy than other polymers tested.
Testing involved dropping a 680kg (1,500lb) weight in incremental 100mm heights onto the centralizer, which is installed onto the appropriate pipe, until the body of the centralizer yields.
R&D Solutions supplies Matrix centralisers to a range of projects.
