Well-SENSE Expands Operations in Australia

Well-SENSE Expands Operations in Australia

Building on the success of multiple Australian operations over the last 18 months, Well-SENSE has appointed Rob Crawford to the position of Region Manager for Australia and Asia Pacific. Rob is based at the R&D Solutions facility in Perth and will continue to expand Well-SENSE’s FiberLine Intervention (FLI) business across the oil and gas, CCUS and mining sectors.

Rob joins Well-SENSE from sister company DTI, where he was Sales and Marketing Director for 11 years and a founding co-owner. At DTI Rob was responsible for global growth, with a focus on delivering high quality customer service and technical advice. Prior to this, Rob worked for Smith International as a Completions Engineer and for SLB as an Operations Support Centre Manager for liner hangers. Here he managed a team of engineers in the USA and supported global product line expansion.

FiberLine Intervention from Well-SENSE is a fast and simple well surveillance solution which delivers quality insights across the lifecycle of the well. The compact and rapid intervention system is suited to a range of temperature, pressure and acoustic surveys which can be used for cement assurance, injection flow profiling and leak detection for ongoing integrity or pre-abandonment operations. FLI also provides data for seismic surveys including VSP and cross well interference monitoring.

Fibre optic surveys provide a complete and immediate profile of the well and surrounding geology, allowing multiple dynamic changes to be monitored in real-time. With data visible on a tablet at the wellsite and streamed to the cloud for remote monitoring, the fibre is in the well only until an answer is identified. Most surveys last just an hour or two, but extended well monitoring over a few days is also routinely conducted. The FLI system has an incredibly small footprint, is easy to mobilise and deploy, delivers high-quality answers quickly and reduces personnel at the wellsite.

Rig Engineering and Fabrication on the Rise

Recent project work – part of which is an industry ‘first’ in Australia – has demonstrated why R&D Solutions is increasingly the go-to service provider for rig engineering and fabrication support.

It’s a core area of our business that is becoming increasingly busy, as exemplified by:

  • the building of a high-level and bespoke 42" Triple Outlet Cement Shoe for an international offshore operator in Western Australia. The project included working closely with our engineering partner to fabricate the cutting and welding of 42" conductor joints to match up to 2 x Triple Outlet Cement Shoes. It was the first time that this work had been done in Australia
  • organising the supply and fabrication of laser cut 90mm thick, high tensile steel plates to support a 42" conductor on an offshore platform.

We’ve established new business relationships with experienced engineering and fabrication companies who provide these services to the standards required by oil and gas companies, and we ensure that the work standards fully align with the needs and expectations of our customers.

“It’s a key area of growth and opportunity for R&D Solutions because it not only broadens our service portfolio but also represents an integrated offering that simplifies things for customers,” says Russell Furner of R&D Solutions.

“While others in the market are reluctant to depart from their mainstream business and offer third party engineering and fabrication services, we see it as a way to enhance our product offering and realise efficiencies for operators.

“Our recent work has received very positive customer feedback – in terms of the quality of the work performed and our ability to deliver in a very short timeframe – and we’re very confident that we’ll continue to grow our activities in this area.”

R&D Solutions Steps Up to the Challenge

R&D Solutions has successfully tackled many diverse challenges presented by customers over the years – and its recent work on behalf of a major offshore operator once again demonstrated its breadth of capabilities.

It was asked to offer guidance on how the customer might rectify a very specific issue: safety concerns related to ladders used by personnel to climb in and out of their bunks on an offshore production facility.

The replacement ladders identified as necessary had to be robust, soft underfoot, safe to use by crew when they were fatigued – and fully in conformance with Australian standards.

R&D Solutions staff member Terry Minello was assigned to work with a local manufacturer in Perth to ensure that the critical criteria were met in full and signed off.

The outcome? R&D Solutions has dispatched the first set of ladders to the customer’s facility and they’re now being used by crew to safely access their bunks inside the cabins.

“I’m proud to have taken on the project on and policed it using the same parameters we apply to other energy sector technology or safety critical equipment,” says Terry.

The exercise proved challenging as the ladders needed to conform to AS for the customer’s QHSE safety requirements.

Manufacturing an industrial certified ladder to suit a domestic environment meant there were a range of very particular issues to address; they had to support regular sanitisation, be light enough for portability across the diversity of the workforce and have a small footprint to enable their use in limited spaces.

“By building a prototype which the customer could review, we simplified the outcome in a similar manner to that which we apply to tools when conducting trials using other technology,” adds Terry. “Demonstrating the product to the customer and making changes as noted always ensures we meet our shared objectives.

“Whilst this project was not an everyday line of business for us, it shows we’re always ready to respond to whatever customer requests come our way. In this case we were happy to supply a very specific solution that supports the customer’s safety agenda.

“R&D Solutions will continue to help our customers whenever they test us on our core operating principle – devising and delivering solutions.”

Casing Integrity Issues: Problem Solved

Our partners typically have a global outlook and are always well placed to work together with us to solve client problems.

Pictured (above) is an example of Coretrax’s niche core expandable technology.

The solution, a proven technology for leak remediation, can be applied to great effect in the Australian market. At R&D Solutions, we’d be delighted to discuss how it can address your challenges – and address them cost-efficiently.

Coretrax’s core expandable solutions can be specifically tailored to suit specific casing integrity needs. With no shoe to drill out, its ReLine MNS technology provides a single-trip isolation solution enabling the relining and isolation of various casing integrity concerns.

Primed to Respond

Our staff are always ready to mobilise, responding swiftly when clients need our expert support – at any time of the year.

Pictured (above) are R&D Solutions personnel, with counterparts from partner Coretrax, taking a quick break on Christmas Eve as they prepare Coretrax reline tools for deployment.

The tools weren’t mobilised in the end, but pre-loaded baskets, technicians and workshop staff nevertheless all stood ready to roll.

At R&D Solutions, we’re hugely grateful to the Coretrax people for sacrificing time at Christmas to provide assistance at very short notice – a great partner with great people!
